Carpet Buying Guide

The perfect carpet is the one best suited to you and the need of your home.

You can book a in-home appointment with us and have a specialist talk you through the different carpet types while you match styles from the range with your décor.

Buying Essentials

Different carpets suit the demands of different rooms. You should always consider footfall, pets, children and how a room is used.

Matching a carpet to a colour scheme. Ideally, you will hold samples up to the walls and furnishings to see how the combination works. You will be able to do this in your home appointment.

Longevity. How long do you need your carpet to last? Some carpets are more durable than others, while some are stain resistant and some help hide dirt.

What do you want to spend? As with everything, budget can influence choice. A carpet is only as good as its installers. All of our installers are NICF Master Fitters insuring your flooring is installed to the highest standard.

What is carpet pile? Pile is another name for the fibres in a carpet. Pile is woven in and out of the carpet backing, creating a series of loops. These are then cut (as in twist pile carpets) or left (as in loop pile carpets).
Deep pile carpets are thick and luxurious. Short pile carpets tend to stand up better in high-traffic areas and are easier to clean.

Wool or synthetic or blended?

Wool

Wool is the original choice and offer huge range of colours and patterns, stripes and berbers. This is due to the ease of which wool can be dyed and the nature of the yarns used. Wool carpets are the luxury choice – they feel incredibly soft and springy, but wool is also hard wearing, durable and long lasting. A wool carpet won’t flatten as much as man-made carpets, thanks to wools natural elasticity. Wool benefits from a scaly surface that holds dirt high in the pile, making it easy to vacuum. Stains can be easily cleaned using a solution of water and mild detergent. And of course, wool is natural. Wool carpets come in twist and loop pile form and are available in various weights.

Synthetic/Man-made

Synthetic carpets are made from polyester or polypropylene and are all stain-free and easy clean. Spills actually roll off the fibres, making for easy cleaning and maintenance. These carpets can be cleaned with a diluted bleach solution and still keep their colour. They come in a range of twist piles, from standard twists up to saxony carpets. Synthetic carpets, like our polypropylene designs, are stain resistant..

Which Carpet for which room?

Saxony carpets and semi saxony carpets are deep-pile design that have a soft feel underfoot. Thicker and richer than other styles, these carpets are ideal for bedrooms and lounges, but can be used in any room. We would avoid these on stairs.

Twists – Twists are an ever popular choice, that have a tufted look. They are the most common type of of carpet and offer a huge range of colours that will suit any room. They are very durable and will keep their form for many years. They are also done in several weights, measured in ounces. The weight of the carpet is basically how thick it is, and how much carpet you get. The higher the weight the denser and thicker the pile will be. To make a twist, the fibres are tightly twisted and then cut, creating a carpet that keeps bouncing back and is create for high traffic areas.

Loops – Loops are a a very durable and hard wearing option, often keeping their form longer than any other carpet type. These are made from yarn that is looped. Small loops are incredibly durable and won’t flatten, while thicker loops give a more luxurious feel. All loop pile carpets give a great texture and feel. They also offer a wide range of striped colours, to give any room, but especially stairs, a vibrant and bold look. Loop piles are ideally suited to high traffic areas and studies. Be cautious using loops in rooms pets are in, their claws can catch in loops and snag them, unravelling the pile.

Berbers – A berber carpet can be in a twist or loop (traditionally a loop) that has a lightly flecked colouring and a textured feel. These are excellent at hiding marks and would be a good choice for children’s bedrooms, dining rooms and high traffic areas.

Why carpet weight is your most important decision

The most important feature of your new carpet is its weight. But why? And what do we mean by the weight?

Our carpets start at 12oz and go up to 75oz. Some of our carpets come in one weight and some come in four.
Thinking about 12oz and 24oz carpets, the latter is a lot thicker and has a lot more material. Twice as much, to be precise.

The higher the weight of the carpet the more material goes into it. The more material, the better a carpet looks and feels and the longer it lasts. Higher weight carpets are better quality carpets.

Axminster & Wilton

If you are looking for something a bit different and not quite run of the mill, then an Axminster or Wilton weave carpet may be just for you. These are often patterned or designed carpets, which offer a wide array of designs, from tartans to floral and everything in between. Nearly always domestic and commercial suited, these carpets are incredibly hard wearing and will often last a lifetime.

Axminster refers to the weaving process, with the pile and the backing being woven together to create a greater stability and better long term performance. With the Axminster method, each individually coloured yarn is selected by the loom, cut and inserted as a ‘U’ shaped tuft wherever needed, often creating intricate patterns. Most of the yarn is on the surface with relatively little in the back. Axminster carpet is best for producing more complex designs, using up to 12 colours, and with an unlimited pattern repeat size. The density, and therefore longevity of the carpet, can be changed according by varying the number of weft ‘shots’ (normally expressed as rows-per-inch) to provide improved wear-resistance, making it the perfect choice carpet for public areas in hotels and hospitality venues.

Wilton – Wilton weaving generally involves fewer colours with the yarn running continuously, either at the surface or in the back. Wilton weave carpet can be created in different textures and so is the preferred weaving method where a loop pile (known as ‘Brussels’ weave), or cut-and-loop texture is preferred. Using fewer colours, and with restrictions on pattern repeat size, designs tend to be simpler or even plain.
